Working together
Learning is a personal endeavor which varies by student. Ms. Collins makes a significant effort to be available to student and parents outside of class hours. She is in her classroom or in the main office until 5 pm or later most school days an is available to work with students during 6th period lunch as well and before school upon request. She responds to email with twenty-four hours. Any of the following policies or any additional accommodations that need to be made can be done, presuming that students and parents are willing to work to together and express their needs and preferences to make the course run smoothly and efficiently, with some fun mixed in.
Attendance and Lateness:
Students are expected to be on time and present at the start of every class. Students who miss a significant number of classes may fall behind and will need to take extra time to work after school or durig lunch to catch up. If a student is running late from another class, please ask the teacher for a late pass. Tardiness and absence from class will result in disciplinary action as is outlined in the PACE attendance policy. If a student will be absent, please have a parent or guardian call the school that morning. More specific information about attendance is included in the student handbook.
Grading Policy:
This year, Pace High School has divided the two semesters into three marking periods each, which may mean that assignments and assessments seem to move faster than in the past. Also, Ms. Collins may decide to weigh one marking period more heavily than another in calculating the semester grade.
Final grades will be based on formative assessments (e.g. classwork, homework, notes, outlines, annotations) (65%) and summative assessments (e.g. projects, tests, written assignments, and debates) (35%). Please use PupilPath, this website, and Google classroom. If you have questions about your grade or would like extra help, please ask Ms. Collins, but not during class.
Types of Assignments:
Late Work:
By and large, slightly late work (within a few days) with a valid and understandable excuse will not be penalized. Major assignments, like essays or projects, will be penalized if turned in late. For essays, all of which will be turned in digitally, they will have 10 points taken off each day it's late until it's over five days late. After five days, the maximum grade that can be earned is a fifty percent.
Behavior and politeness:
In and out of class, please be respectful and demonstrate you are engaged in the assigned task.
Organization:
Because staying organized is an essential life skill, you will be graded on how you arrange your notes. You must date all handouts when they are given to you. Please store handouts and loose-leaf notes neatly in a binder/binder section. You will also need a pen drive.
Materials
This class is not going to use the textbook, so you will be collecting xeroxed handouts. You’ll need these for projects and to study for the Regents.

Types of Assignments:
- Daily assignments (formative): You will be assigned smaller assignments that build towards whatever project we are working on. These may be homework or in-class assignments. They will be checked for completion and may not be turned in late.
- Reading (formative): You will be asked to either annotate or outline readings of varying lengths as homework.
- Tests, Quizzes, and Exams (summative): There will be a quiz each Tuesday. We will have two or three tests per quarter. You should study with the review sheet and your class notes. PACE requires each class to give a midterm and a final exam, each of which is worth 6% of your semester grade.
- Discussions and debates (summative): You will be expected to participate in several types of classroom discussion. You will be graded on the arguments you make and how well you support them with evidence.
- Written assignments (summative): You will complete a variety of written assignments. All must be typed in Times New Roman, 12 point font.
